It has been a few years since I wrote for the magazine World Birdwatch​. It was, however, impossible to resist an offer from editor Martin Fowlie to pen a piece honouring two of my ornithological heroes and former bosses: Josep del Hoyo (founder of Lynx Edicions, editor of Handbook of the Birds of the World) and Nigel Collar (Leventis Research Fellow, BirdLife International). The duo's most recent collaboration is a groundbreaking checklist of the world's birds.
