15 Dec 2016 Wintry lady

Until yesterday, I had never knowingly seen a flightless moth. Indeed, it mystifies me that females of certain species see fit to do without powers of flight and possess only vestigial wings. So I was very excited when Matt Casey phoned me with news that he had found a female Winter Moth crawling up his garden fence, with libidinal males in pursuit. What an amazing, tiny creature: more like a flea or (a species on my mind quite a bit at present) a human head louse than a moth.
