29 Feb 2016 Kyushu cranes

"It's 3am... and I can't get no sleep." I am in Japan, on the island of Kyushu. Day 1 of a rapid-fire trip, experiencing the best of the Oriental winter in this magical country. Today's highlights were an amazing 720 Saunder's Gulls and 1 dozen Black-faced Spoonbills at Uki, then thousands of Hooded Cranes at Arasaki. Mixed in with the latter were 100 White-naped Cranes, a Sandhill Crane, two Common Cranes and a presumed Hooded x Common Crane hybrid. Some quick pics as a taster, then it's back to sleep. I hope..
