For the last year, I've been doing some nice bird surveys in Fenland. Spring saw a passage Osprey, summer saw breeding Hobby and autumn saw a storm-blown Little Gull. Winter was arguably best, however, due in no small part to the large feeding flocks of Whooper Swans in and around the site. It was a proper joy to watch so many, to hear their calls rippling through the early-morning mist, and to pick out the comparatively bonsai Bewick's Swans among them (the latter present in reasonable number despite their national decline, which is presumably a result of 'shortstopping'). On the odd occasion the Whoopers came close enough to photograph - so here are a selection of those images.
