12 July 2014  Footman during football

Last night's moth trap was short on quantity, but not quality. Just 40 or so moths, compared to an average of 80. But a star among them. Four-spotted Footman is a scarce migrant in Britain. Clearly it was new to me - but it dwarfed the Common Footman that I had caught recently. Closer examination showed black on the leading edge of the forewing around the shoulder and yellow back from the head. Technical terms, those. A wonderful catch, prompting a very happy Lowen.
